My dear friend Greg Scott passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 9th, 2003.

Greg and I met in 1988, at a record store on Staten Island. We became fast friends and were bandmates in Beg For Eden together w/ Jacques Cohen from just about the time we met in 1988 to 1993, and then again in an experimental project of his called Hydra.

Hydra did a bunch of shows between 1995 and 1998, at places like the Red Room, The Pyramid club and ABC No Rio. He played noisy experimental keyboards and tape loops. Some of you may remember him from his attendances at the Shipwreckers shows. He was at the Galapagos show earlier this year. He had something kind and thoughtful to say about all the bands who played that night. He had an incredible knowledge of music and art and was as equally at home with (hilariously) crucifying a giant stuffed bunny rabbit on a stage for an "Actionist" Easter performance as he was with discussing correspondence with William Burroughs, Power Electronics, the Vienna Actionists, Mission of Burma, stupid funny Death Metal or being an Eagle Scout and the finer points of indian head dress and pow wow's. It didn't matter, you could discuss just about anything with Greg, and he would have something knowledgeable and enthusiastic to say, sometimes even following it up with a letter.

And although he was one of the few people I've ever known who truly embodied genius, he didn't have a single pretentious, unhumble bone in his body and showed a huge respect, kindness and openness towards everyone and was a true friend to many. He was an amazingly hard worker and had a tough life yet, he accomplished so much with so little of the time and freedom most of us take for granted. In a place (Staten Island) that to be honest, isn’t very hospitable to someone of Greg’s rare sensitivity and talent.

He was my best friend and I considered him to be my brother. I will miss him very much, but he will live on in his art and his work, and in those who loved him.

Peter Messina.
